Pete Enns & The Bible for Normal People

Interview with Dr. Sylvia Keesmaat and Dr. Brian Walsh: Resisting Empire in the Book of Romans

This week Biblical Scholar Dr. Sylvia Keesmaat and Theologian Dr. Brian Walsh talk about what Paul was up to in the book of Romans. We visit topics like salvation and politics and how maybe those words don’t mean what we thought when it comes to the New Testament.

Tweetables

Pithy, shareable, less-than-280-character statements you can share.

  • “It seems to me that asking the question of atonement in Romans, is perhaps asking the wrong question.” Brian Walsh
  • “Basically, [I] try to help people imagine what it’s like to live into this story, and try to imagine what it was like for people in the 1st-century to live into this story, and what we might learn from that.” Sylvia Keesmaat

Interview with Jeffrey Stackert: Who Wrote the Pentateuch?

May 7, 2018

In this episode, Pete & Jared speak with Jeffrey Stackert about the origins of the Pentateuch, or the first five books of the Old Testament. Rather than looking at the books as separate works written by Moses, they discuss the documentary hypothesis which suggests that the Pentateuch was compiled from four sources. And many of the contradictions in the text may actually be indications of converging viewpoints from editors including or omitting details to preserve the integrity of the text.
