Having been raised evangelical, I was not exposed to much of the apocrypha. The more I am exposed to biblical scholarship and the evolution of ideas that are held commonly in the New testament and held in the church today, the more I’m seeing threads on how theology evolved over time.
You guys have touched on things like the idea of one person dying for the sins of many (or for all of Israel) having sprung up/become important in the apocryphal times. Also things like the hell and the afterlife incorporating in some Greco-Roman ideation during that time period. I’m wondering what other ideas commonly held in modern day evangelicalism can tie back to (or are highly influenced by) that time period/apocryphal writings, and are still taught even though evangelical church booted those books.
It seems to me the evie church chopped out a chunk of history, and then claimed all the theological ideas landed in the NT directly from heaven. I would enjoy reclaiming some of that historical development of ideas we see in the NT.
