I was a bit surprised, though, that the Doerfler discussion about Jephthah did not engage with an entirely alternate, but somewhat well-accepted, reading of Jepthah.
This reading finds that J’s vow was not about demanding the human sacrifice of his daughter, but rather, merely allowed for her dedication to perpetual virginity (not that perpetual virginity is w/o considerable cost, of course.)
