In Lev. 16.8, Yahweh commands the Israelites to sacrifice a literal scape-goat to “Azazel”, who, according to the Jewish Study Bible, is believed to be a demon or deity of the wilderness. Are there other biblical examples of Yahweh acknowledging and even “helping” lesser gods, and, if so, what do these examples teach us about Yahweh’s role within this divine community? Does he have friends?
